Women have a unique set of health needs, and wellness exams offer the setting to meet those needs. Board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Meryl E. Kahan, MD, is proud to serve the Little Neck and Douglaston neighborhoods of Queens, New York City, New York, in addition to the Great Neck area of Nassau County, through her work at SheMD. Booking a visit is as easy as a phone call or a few moments online.
A woman’s wellness exam, also known as a well-woman exam, is an annual preventive health visit with your OBGYN. These appointments offer the chance for you to get the screenings appropriate for your age and overall health.
They’re also a setting where you can ask questions and receive guidance on any health area of concern. Checking in with your practitioner is a great way to stay on top of advancements in women’s health and get the advice you can trust from a provider who knows you and your personal health history.
The first part of the process involves a quick gathering of your vital signs. You discuss any health changes you’ve experienced since your last visit. If this is your first well-woman exam at SheMD, expect to spend some time going over your personal and family health histories.
Next, Dr. Kahan performs a pelvic exam. You recline on the exam table or chair with your feet resting in stirrups. Dr. Kahan uses a device called a speculum to gently separate your vaginal walls. This allows her to visually check your vaginal tissue and part of your cervix for any abnormalities. A Pap smear might be part of the process and is a simple test that checks your cervical cells for cancerous changes.
A breast exam might also be part of the process. Feel free to ask Dr. Kahan how to check your breast tissue at home as part of routine cancer screening. There is also time built into the visit for you to ask questions or express concerns.
Nothing is off-limits during your well-woman exams. Dr. Kahan is here to answer any questions you have regarding women’s health or general health.
Some of the issues women choose to discuss during their women’s wellness visits include:
