PRP Hair Restoration Q & A

PRP non-surgical hair restoration involves the topical and injectable application of your own Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to the area of thinning hair. This procedure aims to stimulate new hair growth and enhance the health and texture of existing hair.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is harnessed to stimulate and nourish follicles, promoting hair growth. The highly concentrated plasma contains platelets that release growth factors, which have demonstrated the ability to generate new hair and enhance the density and health of existing hair.

Following the treatment, minimal tenderness and mild swelling may occur in the injection sites for 3-5 days.

The entire treatment, including the preparation of your PRP in our office, cleaning your treatment area, and the injection of PRP into the scalp, typically takes less than an hour for most patients.

PRP contains a concentrated mix of cytokines and growth factors, which can be activated and injected into areas of thinning hair. This process stimulates dormant hair follicles and promotes hair regeneration. PRP treatment has demonstrated improvements in hair health, strength, individual hair diameter, and prevention of further hair loss. It helps maintain the current number of hairs, enhances the health and quality of existing hairs, and in some cases, induces new hair growth, the extent of which varies from person to person.

Studies have shown that PRP induces new hair regeneration in both male and female pattern hair loss, slows down hair loss in men and women, makes finer hairs thicker, and increases hair density and strength. Complementing PRP treatments with medications and supplements can enhance the overall results of hair regeneration.

For optimal results in addressing thinning hair as an initial treatment, we suggest beginning with a series of four PRP treatments, spaced four weeks apart. Subsequently, maintenance treatments are recommended every one to two years to uphold the results of your PRP hair regeneration treatment.

While some initial shedding may occur after PRP treatment, making way for new hair follicles, it generally takes three to six months from your initial treatment to observe measurable results.

The results of PRP treatment for hair regrowth are not permanent. Your genetic predisposition for hair loss remains unchanged, and without ongoing maintenance treatments, hair loss is likely to return. Patients who respond to PRP hair loss treatment typically require repeat sessions every 12-24 months after their initial treatment. Similar to the initial treatment, it may take an additional three to six months to observe measurable improvements in hair density. The need for periodic PRP sessions will depend on your individual response to therapy, genetic factors, the extent of hair loss, and whether you are using any adjunctive treatments such as medications or supplements. The frequency of additional treatments will also be influenced by your hair treatment goals.

As the PRP is derived from your own body, the likelihood of an allergic reaction is virtually eliminated. However, like any treatment involving needle injections, there may be mild bleeding, which is easily controlled with the application of pressure. There is a small risk of bruising and infection at the injection site.

Tenderness in the treated area is common and may persist for a few days. In a small number of individuals, mild swelling of the treated area may occur, lasting a few days. Hair shedding is a rare occurrence.

To explore how PRP can enhance your hair thinning, we encourage you to contact the office at your earliest convenience to schedule a visit. Online scheduling is also available and takes just a few moments.
